Vaping: Nicotine or CBD

From a niche product that only interests small groups of enthusiasts, vapes became a mass product within a few years. Originally introduced as an alternative to smoking, promising less damage to health and more pleasant taste, the vape was called an e-cigarette and sold mainly as rechargeable devices and batteries that allow consumers to buy liquids separately and mix their own flavors. Eventually, however, disposable devices pre-filled with liquid and a single-use battery began to enter many countries. Around this time, the trend of using CBD as a healthy and non-addictive alternative to nicotine liquid arose due to its soothing properties, along with a number of other health benefits.

Let’s look at what we know so we can make a decision what is best for us.

In truth, it is not only tobacco that produces nicotine.

It is produced by many plants as a poison to protect from animals eating their leaves and seeds. In your salad you will find more of the substance than you expect – tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, even peppers are a natural source of nicotine, along with many other fruits and vegetables. However, a Greek salad will not replace a cigarette, at the least because of the low content of the substance, but also because of the type of absorption. Through the lungs, nicotine enters the bloodstream and reaches the brain within 10 seconds, while absorption through the stomach is much slower and incomplete.

It’s been a while since e-cigarettes and vaping hit the market. Many people struggling to quit smoking had decided to switch to e-cigarettes and nicotine liquids. The great advantage of vaping is that it does not have the heavy smell of burning tobacco and does not emit tars that stick to the fingers, mouth and lungs. The consensus is that vaping is safer than smoking, but it is not harmless.

A variety of chemicals go into a vape, that can be harmful when heated and like many products it is important to monitor the quality of the ingredients. The other factor is that nicotine itself has harmful properties, even without burning. Physical and mental addiction is a well-known drawback, but there is a large group of known side effects from regular use, affecting the heart, genitals, lungs, kidneys and others. Many studies have described the carcinogenic potential of nicotine.

In fact, average lethal doses of nicotine have been recorded, such as those for mice – 3 mg / kg, and rats – 50 mg / kg. For an adult, the lethal dose is considered to be 0.5 – 1.0 mg / kg. This is quite high compared to other, even banned alkaloids, such as cocaine, whose lethal dose in mice is 95.1 mg / kg.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid, one of hundreds of active substances found in cannabis. It is famous for its incredibly wide range of health applications and lack of harmful, psychoactive or addictive qualities. A report by the World Health Organization (WHO) states: “[Pure CBD] was not found to have psychoactive properties, and presents no potential for abuse or dependence.”

The fact is that CBD does not have the dangers of nicotine, but it also does not have the same effect on the nervous system. Nicotine stimulates the release of serotonin, which stimulates the nervous system and helps to overcome stress, as well as stimulates the reward centers in the brain, which make us feel calmer, but also more inclined to use the substance. However, CBD has the ability to support the production of the anandamide molecule – an endocannabinoid called the “bliss” molecule, which enhances focus and reduces stress. Other benefits are the antibacterial effect, which helps to overcome infectious diseases and slows the development of cancer cells. Improves sleep, soothes chronic pain and has neuroprotective properties – protects nerve cells. But one big advantage in the context of vaping is that it helps you quit nicotine by reducing the reward signals of taking nicotine.

At this stage, science is still studying CBD. It was not until the last century that the effects of CBD and other cannabinoids on the human body began to be studied in depth. But the conclusion that the substance is not harmful to humans is widespread in scientific research. While nicotine and its harms and benefits have long been known and difficult to dispute.
